PCB denies reports of rift between Misbah and Hafeez ? Cricket News Update
The Pakistan Cricket Board has strongly denied the reports of rift between national Test and ODI skipper Misbah-ul-Haq and senior all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez, stating that there was no truth in the reports about the fight between the two.
Reports in some sections of the media earlier this week suggested that Misbah and Hafeez were involved in a verbal spate during the practice match at Kimberly. The reports have claimed that argument was the result of simmering differences between the skipper and Hafeez over the selection matters ahead of the forthcoming ODI series against South Africa.
Hafeez traditionally opens the innings for Pakistan in all the three formats of the game, but it has been learned that Misbah wanted him to bat one down in the upcoming one-dayers against the Proteas. The skipper also wants to play two specialist all-rounders in Shoaib Malik and Shahid Afridi in the team, while Hafeez not only wants to bat at the top, but also wants to go in with at least three pacers.
But the Pakistan Cricket Board, in an unusual way, stepped into the matter giving a clarification that there were no differences amongst the think tank of Pakistan cricket team.
"Taking cognizance of media reports on few media outlets that there was supposedly a disagreement amongst the think tank of Team Pakistan, in particular between skipper Misbah-ul Haq and Mohammad Hafeez, with regards to the selection of the ODI XI, the PCB highups launched a thorough inquiry. The team management was contacted in South Africa and it was discovered that no such disagreement whatsoever existed amongst the think tank, or between Misbah and Hafeez," PCB said in a statement.
"It is therefore stated for record that all such isolated reports in the media are baseless and inspired. And an attempt to demoralize the team," the statement read further.
Pakistan cricket team manager Naved Cheema also rubbished the reports about the fight between Misbah and Hafeez, saying no such incident took place at all. He further said that all the boys on the tour are close to each other and are in high spirits ahead of the ODI series.
The five-match ODI series gets underway in Bloemfontein on Sunday, March 10, 2013.
